St. Augustine’s 450th Commemoration Celebration at Casa de Solana B&B

The hype has begun with regard to St. Augustine’s 450th commemoration/celebration happenings! In the year 2015, the nation’s oldest city will celebrate 4.5 centuries, having been witness to many a significant event!

As a show of love and support, Casa de Solana B&B is offering a celebration package (priced at just $499 plus tax), to include a 2-night stay (in the city’s 7th oldest house, located on the nation’s oldest street), complimented by a $25 dessert card to Old City House Restaurant; admission for 2 to the Oldest Jail; a $25 gift card to Old City Remedies at the Oldest Drug Store; and 2 (three-day) Old Town Trolley passes.

If you book this package, you may select from one of three rooms–Theresa, Kirby Smith, and Mary Mitchell. Theresa is on the second floor of the Main House and boasts a private balcony overlooking the beautifully landscaped courtyard, antique furniture, and a Queen-sized bed. Kirby, in the de Palma House, sports a sitting area with sofa, armoire, and flat-screen television, mini fridge, King-sized bed, and combination jetted tub/ /shower. Mary Mitchell presents with 2 elegant yet comfy high-backed chairs that face the flat screen television and fireplace (operational November thru March), King-sized bed, mini fridge, and beautifully-tiled walk-in shower.

At Old City House Restaurant, you’ll delight in 19th century décor while indulging in one of their famous deserts, perhaps vanilla brulé or the fudge brownie cake with graham cracker crust and a cream topping?

Use your $25 gift card at Old City Remedies at the Oldest Drug Store (a place in which to slow down and explore the gifts that nature has given us to heal our bodies and souls) towards whatever tickles your fancy—African black soap, Shea soap and butter, organic herbs and teas, Dead Sea bath salts and other skinful delights, smoke-able herbs, energy supplements, smudging and blessing tools, and much, much more!

At the Oldest Jail, explore Sherriff Joe Perry’s quarters, where he and his wife lived next to 72 prisoners, both male and female. Step into the cells, visit the maximum security area, and gaze upon the gallows where many an unfortunate individual lost its place in the life line, sometimes justly, sometimes not!

Your Old Town Trolley passes will take you everywhere you need to go, but don’t be too hasty in the hops on and off, be sure to do the entire tour and learn the exciting insider details about life in St. Augustine, past and present!

If that wasn’t enough to entice you into a visit, there is a ton of fun stuff going on in September! Every Wednesday (weather permitting) the St. Johns Pier Pavilion at St. Augustine Beach on A1A hosts Music by the Sea; on the 19th, schwing to the sounds of the ET Swing Band, with appetizers by Café 11; on the 26th, classic R/R by the All Star Band will rock the pier, with appetizers by Sunset Grille.

The St. Augustine Amphitheatre’s got it going on too, with JETHRO TALL on 9/21; BLONDIE AND DEVO on 9/22, STEVIE NICKS on 9/25; and JOE COCKER with Dave Mason on 9/30. OMG … peeps who grew up in the 70s in 80s … book your room now, right?!

On September 29, the ever-popular Sunset Moonrise event takes place from the top of the St. Augustine Lighthouse from 6:15-7:45 pm and includes a champagne toast provided by the San Sebastian Winery and light hors d’oeuvres provided by The Reef.  Tickets for nonmembers are $25, for museum members $20. Reservations are a must; 829-0745.
