St Augustine FL Lightner Museum a Historic Hotel

Green hedges and statue on pedestal in front of grey stone building with arched windows, two towers with red roofsThe Lightner Museum is located near Casa de Solana Bed and Breakfast in St. Augustine’s historic district. The Museum, housed in the former Alcazar Hotel, is just a five minute stroll away from our bed and breakfast on Aviles Street. The Alcazar, built at the height of the Gilded Age, provides the perfect setting for Lightner’s eclectic collection of fine and decorative art from that era. The Museum’s exhibits include Tiffany glass, paintings, sculpture, furniture, and curios. A music room is home to a collection of antique mechanical musical instruments such as player pianos that are demonstrated twice each day.

In October, 2018, Promenade the Alcazar will mark the 130th anniversary of the Alcazar Hotel and the 70th anniversary of the Lightner Museum. New exhibits will highlight items in the museum’s permanent collection that have not been displayed in the recent past. In addition to the Museum itself, the grounds include a lovely courtyard garden designed for the enjoyment of the guests of the Alcazar. The Museum website has a brief video illustrating the Museum’s exterior and garden.

A century ago, the Alcazar Hotel offered its guest an indoor swimming pool that was the largest in the world at that time. Today, this elegant pool area in the Museum hosts the Café Alcazar. The Café, serves luncheon daily from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm and features New American cuisine.

The Lightner Museum is open daily for self-guided tours; staff members demonstrate the antique musical instruments at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm each day. Specialty adult, children, and behind the scenes tours are available by reservation.

When you stay at our historc B&B, the Lightner Museum is just one of the many attractions nearby in Saint Augustine’s historic district. Our guests will find the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum across Aviles Street from Casa de Solana, and the Peña-Peck House a short walk away.
