Gamble Rogers Folk Festival May 3-5, 2013

It's that time of year again ... when hundreds and hundreds of folk music fans flock to St. Augustine FL for the annual Gamble Rogers Folk Festival from May 3-5, 2013, to celebrate Gamble Rogers and the music he loved and inspired. The entertainment lineup this year will feature more than 50 artists to include Claire Lynch, Flagship Romance, Sam PacettiGrant Peeples, and local favorite Katherine Archer.

Gamble Rogers--a poet who writes verse to music--was born just south of St. Augustine FL in Winter Park FL, to a loving family of famous architects and high achievers. Having always had the bug to perform, he side-tripped to New York to watch an audition for the Serendipity Singers (while on his way to a job interview at a Massachusetts architectural firm). He auditioned himself and the rest is history! He played around Florida and the rest of the country for years. He mentored many up-and-comings, to include Jimmy Buffett; in fact, Buffett dedicated his album Fruitcakes to Rogers. Rogers went on to become a regular contributor to the NPR program “All Things Considered”. He and his wife Nancy bought a home on Anastasia Island where they enjoyed kayaking, bike riding, and camping (Anastasia Island being the perfect place for such things).

Rogers lost his life in October 1991 while attempting to rescue a swimmer in peril. He was laid to rest in Palm Cemetery in Winter Park FL. His head stone reads “The Florida Troubadour”. He was honored with two medals of heroism--one from Carnegie Hero Fund, the other from Kiwanis International Foundation. Less, than a year following his death, the state park where he lost his life was renamed Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area. The coquina rock features a plaque bestowing him the title “Beloved Guitarist, Storyteller, and Gentleman”.

So come join the celebration! Not sure if you like this kind of music? Click on each group name below for soundclips. Casa de Solana Bed and Breakfast is booked Friday and Saturday, but we still have availability on Sunday!
